Real marine science, open to visitors
The University of Texas Marine Science Institute is UT Austin's coastal research campus, based in Port Aransas. Alongside the serious science, its public-facing Patton Center for Marine Science Education gives visitors a close look at the fish, invertebrates and ecosystems of the very Gulf and bay you are vacationing on — eight large aquaria, interactive displays, and fish-feeding and keeper talks.
Plan your visit
It is an excellent, genuinely educational stop for families and a strong rainy-day option. The Patton Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM, and admission is free; hours can shift seasonally, so it's worth a quick check before a special trip.
